Believe it or not this photo was taken in our GP Room on Friday evening. This was shortly before staff and guests from Norway, Germany, Spain and Romania sat down for a lovely Irish stew.

Switch It Off

Since last September we have been trying to reduce energy usage all around the school. Students made signs for every switch to remind people to "Switch It Off" when the lights are not needed. Thanks to the Green Team for organising this.

The front of our school got a new sign last week. It's a companion to our existing one but promotes our new Pre-school and Daycare side. Made by SignSystem Navan, we support local business.

Chickens

The temporary fencing for the chickens, on hire from Navan Hire, is working out well for them. They are uncovering all sorts of rubbish and plastic though, thanks to the students to helped to clean up their area this morning. "ten gold stars".

The chickens seem to be enjoying their new home and new job, clearing the garden. They have started laying eggs again. Although their area did need some work after Honey escaped last week! Big thanks to Foyin for catching her.

We had a limited amount of the Fighting Words Annual on sale in the school today. Almost all the students in the school have visited Fighting Words over the years so they know all about how much fun they can have writing stories and illustrating them. This annual is a an extension of that fun and is perfect for the school holidays!

A performance of the Halleluja Concert for the parents who were unable to make it to the RDS. All welcome.

Dress rehearsal for all students for the end of term show.

End Of Term Concert at 9.30am. All welcome.
Cake Sale Home backed cakes, buns, tarts etc.

THURSDAY
School closes at 12 noon for the holidays.
School reopens on Monday 9th January 2012.

Kyle Dempsey from 1st Class was one of the 8 winners in the recently held competition to help Santa and the Mayor, Anton McCabe, switch on the Christmas lights in Navan town. He had a great time helping Santa give all the children a present. Kyle also got a lovely surprise voucher for the Navan Shopping Centre.

Parents' Association

The Navan Educate Together Parents' Association hold monthly meetings on the first Tuesday of every month. So the next one is next week, 6th December. All parents are welcome.
The PA is always open to ideas, anything that might help the school or make it a more exciting place. Fundraising is one part of what the PA does but not everything!

Garda Visit

Garda Tony Brady visited the children from Josephine’s class on Monday. He spoke to them about road safety and the children really enjoyed the visit. The children from pre-school also enjoyed his visit and they all enjoyed getting to see the inside of the Garda van. There are photos of the visit on the website here.

Pyjama Day Tomorrow!

The School Council are running their first fundraiser tomorrow, Friday the 2^nd December. All funds raised will be donated to the school. The School Council would like all pupils and staff to wear their pyjamas to school for 50 cent. You can bring your teddy to school too for an extra 20cent. This promises to be a fun day so please support their efforts.

Pride Of Place Awards 2011

Well done to everybody at school who participated in the "Dirty Old Towns" programme when we spent the weekend sprucing up our school. Our hard work won us a Pride of Place award for all of our efforts. Ciara Cuniffe, Tara Cuniffe and Eva went along to the awards to receive our prize from the Mayor of Navan Anton McCabe.

Foyan with bags!

NETNS are collecting clothes for Liberties Recycling Training and Development. They are a clothes recycling social enterprise charity that provides people affected by drug and alcohol use with the stability, work experience, skills and confidence needed to move into mainstream employment, training and education, all within a supportive work environment.

Re-cycled Art Project

The children from all classes were asked to make a piece of art from items that would normally be put in the re-cycling bin over the mid-term break. We had some wonderful and imaginative entries. Well done to all the children who took part. The prize for the overall winner went to Armin who designed an out of this world space station.

A Romanian classroom

Today Eva, Eleanor and Oonagh visited the Ady Endre Hungarian school in Bucharest where they heard the children play enchanting music on recorders of many sizes. They also visited lots of classrooms and saw plenty of charming children from pre-school up to secondary school. Most of the classrooms have about 12 children in them so they are very small.

For their Hallowe'en treat children from Eva's class went to a Hallowe'en party run by the students of Youthreach in the alley off Trimgate Street in Navan. The children had a fantastic time with facepainting, being scared by spooks hiding behind gravestones, Hallowe'en wordsearches and the best of all..... dancing to Thriller along with "Michael Jackson". Many thanks to Sharon Maher Bordallo and all at Youthreach for a great time.

Mid Term Recycled Art!

Over the Hallowe'en Mid-Term holiday we are encouraging all of the children to produce a piece of artwork using recycled/waste materials which would otherwise be thrown away. They will be displayed and judged in the Long Corridor on Monday November 7th. Judges will be looking for imaginative use of materials. We're really looking forward to seeing some splendid work coming back in and brightening up our school for our first day back.

The theme of Oonagh's assembly was harvest and the children were invited to bring in food for the St. Vincent de Paul Society. We were overwhelmed with the response. Here is just a portion of the cans and packets that the children brought in. Well done to everybody.

School Trip to the Solstice

Children in 4th 5th 6th Class had a splendid time when they went to a workshop with authors Oisin McGann, Judi Curtin and Sarah Webb. Sophie made us all proud when she won a t-shirt for asking Sarah Webb the best question which was "Did you always know that you were going to be a writer?"

Sustainable Energy Workshop

Yesterday Ben came to give us a workshop on the theme of renewable energy. We had a fantastic time with his amazing bike which enabled us to use our own energy to light up bulbs, work blenders, grate carrots, grind coffee beans and make a super smoothie.
Thanks to Meath County Council for sponsoring the event. We all learned loads.

Sustainable Energy Workshop

The children from 4^th, 5^th & 6^th class will attend a Sustainable Energy Workshop in the G.P. room on tomorrow. This workshop will allow the children to take part in hands on activities which will make them more ecologically aware of their environment. We would like to thank Peter Brady from Meath Co. Balrath Woods Trip

Last Thursday morning the children from Josephine’s & Oonagh’s class went to Balrath Woods as part of National Tree Day. They collected leaves from all the different types of trees and learned about the changes that occur to trees in autumn. We were very proud of them as they all behaved brilliantly. It was a very enjoyable trip for all concerned.

This week the students in Eva's class told the story of creation from the Judeo-Christian perspective for their assembly about the Jewish celebration of Rosh Hoshannah. The story was accompanied by their wonderful pictures depicting the "seven days of creation." Can you guess which days they illustrated? Following the story the children sang a rousing Hebrew song in two rounds. Well done to 5th and 6th. You were brilliant!

First Tuck Shop of the Term

New parents might not know this, held on the last Friday of every month is the school Tuck Shop. People bring in home made goods and money raised forms part of the ongoing school fund raising. Here's a blog post from last April's Tuck Shop.

We're into the 4th week of Line-Up Cup in the 2011/2012 term. Time for an update.
The first week the cup was won by Pauline's Class (4th/3rd). Then the cup was taken two weeks in a row by Oonagha's Class (1st). Finally today Jo's Class (Junior Infants) won the Cup! Well done to the infants for all their hard work.

The chickens are sharing the space with some other birds! Nestled inside a breeze block in the wall are a family of small birds.

Finally the hens arrived at their new home at Navan Educate Together NS. After a short introduction they slowly emerged from their cage. Who wouldn't be nervous with this crowd! There is plenty for them to do in their large enclosure. They made sure to bring their mirror! Yes, these birds like to look at themselves. If you have any decent sized old mirrors to add to their home, please bring them in.

This is a very exiting project for the school so please respect their space, do not throw food or rubbish, do not pull on the fence and never enter their home without a teacher.

Small Change Fridays

Small Change Fridays has come to an end for this year. This is a low key fundraising effort. All year long each class collected coppers and small change, amazingly almost €600 has been collected! As a class Senior Infants raised the most money. Here they are celebrating their win!

Last of the four hens is Toffee. She is the one in charge and is the largest and darkest of the lot. Toffee keeps her distance but is still as curious as them all.

Fudge is the middle of the sisters and is easily identifiable by the white spot on her right side. She was hand reared from a chick and so is the most comfortable around people.
